We have lived away from family for the past 5 years and I honestly do not miss it at all, I think besides the consumerism (which you can see anyplace in the world) it's the obligatory nature of the days surrounding the holiday that I am glad I left behind. We spend the season how we want and with whom we want! As you say about Australia lacking the je n'sais qoi, Chiang Mai has been pretty low on the Christmas decorations. It's the only time I've slightly yearned for New York City cold.
